Fitting guides, written by the people who build the gear

Every tent and awning ships with printed instructions. These pages cover the parts installers ask about most: crossbar spacing, torque, awning swing clearance and long-term care.

Fitting a hard shell roof top tent

  1. Check the dynamic roof load of your vehicle against the tent weight on the product page.
  2. Set crossbar spacing to the range printed on the tent base, then centre the tent front to back.
  3. Slide the mounting bolts into the base tracks, fit the plates under the crossbars and hand-tighten.
  4. Torque the nuts evenly in a cross pattern, then open and close the shell twice to check clearance.
  5. Re-check the nuts after the first 100 km and then at every service.

Fitting a soft shell rooftop tent

  1. Fold the tent closed and lift it onto the crossbars with two people.
  2. Position the fold-out side towards the vehicle's kerb side so the ladder lands on flat ground.
  3. Fit the mounting rails, leaving room for the tailgate or boot to open fully.
  4. Tighten evenly, then unroll the tent and check the ladder reaches the ground at your ride height.

Mounting a 270° or 180° awning

  1. Decide the mounting side — driver position and door layout matter more than the roof line.
  2. Bolt the awning brackets to the rack, keeping the bag level along its length.
  3. Lift the awning onto the brackets and clamp lightly while you check the swing clearance.
  4. Deploy fully once before final torque so the arms sweep without touching the vehicle.
  5. Always peg the legs and use the guy ropes in wind.

Care, storage and waterproofing

  1. Pack the tent dry whenever possible; if you pack it wet, open it within 24 hours.
  2. Brush off dirt and rinse with clean water only — no detergents on coated fabric.
  3. Check zips and lubricate with a dry silicone stick each season.
  4. Inspect gas struts and hinges annually and replace worn parts before they fail.
